I disagree and don't think this needs to be added into the core software. As most people have said themselves, it's a niche problem and doesn't crop up often. As easy way to solve this (albeit it's a manual solution) is for a moderator to post a reply stating that they are going to moderate the topic and then they can continue using whatever tools they want.
It also doesn't take much effort for other moderators to check the who is online page and see if other moderators are in the MCP or not. This sort of thing would be fine to resolve it to an extension. Considering undoing actions isn't too difficult and there is an audit log in MCP anyway, it shouldn't be considered unreasonable that people can easily go back on an a certain action or even simply check to see what progress another moderator has made with managing a post and/or topic.
